12: I keep watching yuri anime and I still don’t know why. (Kase-san and Morning Glories)

Sweet Blue Flowers. Whispered Words. Yuri Kuma Arashi. Wandering Son (arguably). Now it’s come to this.

Actually, I forgot to mention stuff like Hibike! Euphonium and Amanchu! because they’re more “totally but actually not” gay, but it doesn’t change the fact that I seem to gravitate more towards anime with girl/girl relationships. As for the opposite, I’d need a recommendation for an actual BL anime that isn’t trashy. That’s maybe why I skipped on Citrus and Netsuzou Trap, even when it’s yuri. I’m not into trashy romance.

Maybe that’s the schtick though? Hmm. There’s something about romance in these shoujo-ai anime that differentiates itself from heterosexual romance in anime. It doesn’t treat its subject material like one treats a punchline or a sin. There’s a hint of fairness, of understanding, present in the anime because the mere premise demands it. Hetero romance does the exact same thing though. What could be so different?

Kase-san and Morning Glories seems to answer it as such: they get the kiss out of the way. It’s no longer a question of whether Kase and Yamada become a couple. Instead, the main focus is what happens after the confession. Handling new feelings, hiding a potentially salacious relationship, and new environments come to play once you become boyfriend and girlfriend. New problems arise and old ones disappear. Those new problems, in my view, are what makes these stories interesting in comparison to the mainstream stuff.

I know barely any high school romance where the boy and the girl start the relationship very early into the story. The majority of these anime tend to do the “will they or won’t they” dance with some narrative contrivances placed here and there to pad out the season. That’s not to say that I no longer enjoy them. Heterosexual romance anime tend to skew higher out of all the anime I watch. Perhaps that’s why. Given I’ve seen so much romance play out in such a fashion, maybe what I wanted this year was a change of pace. Something new to think about when it comes to love and all its hurdles.

Oh, another reason is that yuri tends to be more intimate thanks to there being, like, an actual relationship. Physically intimate, mind you. Intimate, physical relationships. Touchy touchy feely. Baseball fields. I’m talking about baseball fields.

Girl hot. That is all.

  1. Hadn’t heard of Kase-san and Morning Glories before, but now I’m definitely going to check out the manga (since the OVA was basically only a PV). Somewhat of a side note, It’s funny how we both kind of trashed on Citrus and Netsuzou TRap in our first 12Days post this year.

Nothing pleases a blogger more than a bit of feedback.
